iPad 3 Expected to Have 4G Connectivity

iPad 3 Expected to Have 4G ConnectivityApple’s next version of the iPad will feature 4G LTE connectivity on both Verizon Wireless and AT&T, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The device, dubbed the iPad 3, is expected to be unveiled March 7 and may come with a higher-resolution display and a quad-core chip.
Apple is quiet as usual on the new iteration of the iPad, but next month the iPad 2 will be one year old and an updated version is expected from the company. Last year, the iPad 2 was launched on March 2. It has since sold more than 43 million, maintaining Apple’s position as market leader despite a flurry of rival Android tablets.
Details about the iPad 3 are very thin yet pundits seem to have reached a consensus on a core set of improvements for the new tablet. A high-resolution Retina Display is hot-tipped for the iPad 3, doubling the current iPad's resolution to 2048-by-1536. While production has reportedly begun for the display, some argue the improved screen could make the iPad 3 slightly thicker -- though it would be unusual of Apple to launch a new product that’s thicker than the older version.
A quad-core chip is on the cards for the iPad 3, says the iMore website. Dubbed A6, the quad-core system-on-a-chip would have twice the power of the dual-core A5 found in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, and would be powerful enough to drive the above-mentioned Retina Display. Apple has introduced new chips with each iteration of the iPad, chips that have later found their way to the latest iPhone.
iPad 3 Expected to Have 4G ConnectivityIf the reports are accurate, Apple would be in keeping with the strategy it has deployed with new iPhones and iPads. The Retina Display in the iPhone would finally make its way across the line to the iPads, and the company would also make the long-anticipated jump to 4G technology, widely adopted by now by high-end Android devices.
What appears to have been holding back Apple from adoption 4G LTE by now is battery life with the technology, as Android rivals are widely documented to suffer from poor battery performance. It’s unclear though whether Apple will make the jump to 4G and manage to keep the same 10-hour battery life for the iPad 3, and later down the line, a 4G iPhone with battery life comparable to earlier models.

iPad 3 Expected First Week of March

The trickle of iPad 3 rumors has officially turned into a flood.
The latest we're hearing is that Apple will announce the third-generation iPad in the first week of March. This comes from AllThingsD's John Paczkowski, who wrote today that sources were telling him that the announcement was likely to take place in San Francisco.
The location will probably be the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, said Paczkowski, and the iPad 3 itself is likely to be on sale around a week later.
This goes against an interesting theory put forward by The Verge earlier this week -- that Apple will announce the iPad 3 on Wednesday, February 29 (Apple typically announces new iPads on a Wednesday) and it will go on sale Friday, March 9 (previous iPads have hit the shelves on a Friday). So, perhaps it could be a Wednesday, March 7 announcement instead?
Meanwhile, the notoriously unreliable Macotakara blog has published a picture of what it claims is an LCD panel manufactured by Sharp for the iPad 3.
Images of the purported back cover for the iPad 3 also emerged this week, while another report casts doubt on theories that the third-gen iPad will have a quad-core processor.
However, we think that iOS 5.1 could launch on March 9, possibly alongside the iPad 3.

iPad 3 With New 'Retina Display' to Be Announced in March, Say Reports

It's iPad 3 fever all over again today as unconfirmed reports of an iPad 3 launch in early March circulate online. Adding to the excitement is alleged leaked pictures of Apple's next-gen iPad "retina display" made by Sharp.
Where would we be without Apple rumors, leaks, and shameless speculation? Probably calmer and better informed, so I'm not betting much on this purported snap of the next iPad's multi-touch screen. Additionally, according to AllThingsD, Apple is planning to roll out its next iPad in March. We have heard these roll-out rumors before. Last time the Internet worked its way into an iPad tizzy the iPad was set to launch in February. That turned out to be balderdash.
I'm not going to join the hordes and speculate on the March arrival of the iPad 3 (or not). But I do find the reports of a retina display very intriguing. Let's take a careful look at what it tells us (or doesn't) about the iPad 3 just the same.
The shot of what looks like a screen component appears on Japanese site Macotakara, a site that posts Apple rumors (but with a mixed track record). They've lifted it from another Japanese site, iLabFactory. The claim: It's an LCD panel made by Sharp, and it's also a 9.7-inch display for Apple's next-gen iPad with Cupertino's trademark Retina Display technology.
Just to remind anyone who's forgotten, "retina" is just a marketing term Apple uses to refer to displays with great than 300 ppi (pixels per inch), which — viewed from a distance of about 12 inches — is the maximum number the average human retina can discern. The iPhone 4 and 4S, running at 960 x 640 pixels across 3.5 inches diagonal, meet this criteria, but the iPad 2, running at 1024 x 768 pixels across 9.7 inches diagonal, doesn't.
Macotakara notes that the labeling on the display indicates it's made by Sharp, then adds it's a QXGA display that "seems to be made...for the upcoming iPad 3." QXGA means the resolution would be 2048 x 1536 pixels, though when you compute the pixel density across a 9.7-inch screen, it comes out to about 264 ppi -- short of the generally accepted 300 ppi threshold, though a huge leap over the iPad 2's pixel density of about 146 ppi.
Then again, all we really have here are a couple of Japanese sites putting up pictures and making allegations without clear sources. There's another rumor circulating (with pictures) about the next iPad's aluminum backside, indicating that the iPad 3 (if indeed that's what Apple intends to call it) may have a different logic board, a larger battery, a different camera, and -- perhaps bolstering the Sharp rumor's credibility -- a redesigned LCD.
